All across the EU, successfully implemented or advanced projects, big or small, rural or urban, private or public and of all technologies were invited to apply for the European Broadband Awards until 7 September. All applications are now being assessed by an eminent jury of five broadband experts. The jury will select the finalists for each of the five categories in October 2018. The winners will be awarded during the Broadband Day: Mind the Broadband Gap Conference on 19 and 20 November in Brussels.

For the fourth year in a row, the European Commission (DG Connect) is carrying out the European Broadband Awards, searching for outstanding projects tackling the rollout of broadband. This year’s call for project applications has been open from 2 May to 7 September. The highest number of applications came from Denmark, Germany and Spain. The majority of projects applied in category 3 “Territorial cohesion in rural and remote areas”. The projects are now being assessed by a jury of five experts in broadband.

The projects will be awarded in five categories:

1: Innovative models of financing, business and investment

  • Effective and innovative financing, business or investment models

2: Cost reduction and co-investment in a future proof infrastructure

  • Measures exploiting the synergies between different infrastructures and cooperation among relevant stakeholders in building and investing in future proof high capacity infrastructure

3: Territorial cohesion in rural and remote areas

  • Impact on territorial cohesion of rural and remote areas, on sustainable territorial development, competitiveness and better connectivity of territories

4: Socio-economic impact and affordability

  • Direct and indirect socio-economic impacts and effects on the affordability of services for end-users

5: Openness and competition

  • Openness of the infrastructure and creating favourable conditions for competition among retail suppliers.
