The potential analysis for gigabit expansion is an important building block for fiber optic expansion in Germany. In August, the database was expanded to include municipalities and districts of major cities. Previously, queries were only possible at state and district level.

The aim of the potential analysis is to determine in a model analysis which addresses of private households, commercial locations and public facilities in Germany can in principle be connected with fiber optic connections by network operators on their own account.

The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) considers the analysis to be a central measure of the gigabit strategy alongside the Gigabit Basic Directory. The potential analysis helps to direct the funding specifically to the municipalities with the greatest backlog or funding needs and is intended to provide a sound basis for discussion with the telecommunications companies as part of the industry dialogues that take place prior to a funding procedure in order to fully exploit the possibilities of self-service expansion and to better identify real funding needs. The results of the potential analysis are updated on an ongoing basis and can be viewed at www.bmdv.bund.de/potenzialanalyse .
