The Rhineland-Palatinate Gigabit Charter was announced on 20 September 2023 in order to achieve the goal of making fibre optics available to all 1.93 million households and all commercial areas and public institutions in Rhineland-Palatinate by 2030. It was signed by numerous network operators, their associations, chambers and municipal leaders at the 7th meeting of the network alliance.
The charter is a commitment that follows on from the “Memorandum of Understanding” drawn up in 2017, which forms the basis for cooperation between all stakeholders involved in broadband expansion in Rhineland-Palatinate. With the Gigabit Charter, the cooperation should now also orchestrate and advance the expansion of fiber optics in the state.
“The network alliance for Rhineland-Palatinate has accelerated the expansion of the network. Since 2018, almost one million new households have been connected to high bandwidths. It is important to me that less densely populated areas are also well connected, and we have agreed this with the private telecommunications industry. They have announced nationwide investments of around 50 billion euros in the expansion of fiber optics and we will continue to provide funding to give a boost where it is absolutely necessary,” explained Minister President Malu Dreyer at the signing ceremony.
In the charter, the participants commit to achieving high network utilization and accelerating expansion through cooperation and mutual access. The broadband portal developed jointly by the states of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate serves as a central key to accelerating and intensifying the expansion. This means that digital applications can be used to approve and implement expansion procedures more quickly. The state also announced that it would support the procedures standardized in DIN 18220 in particular and that it would work with the stakeholders involved in the network alliance to compile positive practical examples of alternative installation methods for rural areas. The results will be made available to the local authorities.
