The expansion of fiber optics in Germany continues to gain speed. This is exemplified by the 46 decisions handed over, 14 ground-breaking ceremonies and four (partial) start-ups as part of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure’s (BMVI) broadband funding program.

These 64 expansion projects alone will provide over 51,500 previously underserved connections with gigabit bandwidths once all construction work is complete, including around 42,800 households, around 5,500 companies and almost 300 institutions, including around 340 schools. The BMVI is supporting these projects with over 222.5 million euros from federal broadband funding.

With this funding as well as supplementary state funding programs and the municipal contribution, the BMVI, the states and the municipalities are jointly creating the basis for nationwide and future-proof broadband coverage and thus paving the way for the gigabit society.

As a result, more and more funding recipients in the federal broadband funding program are achieving their goal: regional broadband expansion with a gigabit-capable fiber optic infrastructure as an essential locational advantage and part of the public services provided to the regional population.
