The district of Cham in the Upper Palatinate has made a special contribution to the issue of sustainability as part of the broadband expansion: among other things, it installed a solar system on the roof of the new Point of Presence (PoP) site in Falkenstein, which reduces consumption (from the grid) by 30 percent.
“The topic of sustainability is becoming increasingly important in broadband expansion,” said Tim Brauckmüller, Managing Director of aconium GmbH and project sponsor for the federal broadband funding program, at the commissioning on 16.10.2021 in front of around 50 participants, including Bavaria’s Minister of Finance and Home Affairs Albert Füracker and District Administrator Franz Löffler. Brauckmüller emphasized that Cham deserves special praise for its great commitment. The district had succeeded in making the expansion in the region efficient and future-proof while always keeping an eye on the ecological factor.
Energy-efficient and rainproof
The new PoP site is not only energy-efficient, but also exceptionally rainproof. In addition, the district was able to ensure through particularly sustainable network planning that no new civil engineering work will be necessary when connecting additional network participants.
Tim Brauckmüller: “The declared aim of federal broadband funding is the nationwide expansion of a future-proof, high-performance gigabit network. Gigabit expansion is not only essential for the sustainable development of regions, it can also be designed to be sustainable.”
At the launch ceremony for the first network section of the district’s fiber optic network, District Administrator Franz Löffler emphasized the rapid pace of implementation: “As of today, the first citizens in the southwestern district have access to a municipal data highway. The full commitment of the district of Cham to the fiber optic expansion is paying off. One year after the start of the civil engineering work, the first citizens can now use this future-oriented infrastructure. I also sincerely thank the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria, which are making this huge infrastructure project possible with funding of almost 90 percent.”
Minister of Finance and Home Affairs Albert Füracker praises the commitment of the district of Cham: “The gigabit expansion in the largest district of the Upper Palatinate is in full swing! Today, the district of Cham is an important step closer to its goal of a nationwide gigabit expansion. The Free State of Bavaria is supporting the expansion of the fiber optic network with 63 million euros. This is the highest funding decision since the start of Bavarian broadband funding. In future, over 17,000 buildings in 37 municipalities will be connected to the gigabit network with a direct fiber optic connection. The project under the leadership of the district is a prime example of inter-municipal cooperation. Together we can achieve a lot and connect the whole of Bavaria with fiber optics!”
