Digitalization brings both opportunities and risks: it has a long-term impact on our working, living and mobility environments and is not only transforming our society, but is also having an impact on the environment. The nationwide expansion of gigabit networks also raises questions about sustainable expansion. For this reason, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) (together with the industry associations Breko, Buglas and eco) is launching a series of dialogues on the topic of “Shaping digitalization sustainably” on 17 August 2021. The digital kick-off event is intended to provide an insight into the complexity of the topic and in particular highlight the climate-relevant aspects of grid expansion: This begins with efficient grid planning, material selection, production and supply chains and includes construction processes and construction site coordination. Other factors of sustainable digitalization, such as the environmentally friendly and resource-conserving operation of data centers, energy efficiency and the reuse/use of end devices, will also be discussed. The dialog series is aimed at experts from politics, administration, associations and companies and aims to promote interaction and exchange between all stakeholders. Numerous partners, including representatives from the construction, housing, transport and telecommunications industries, will be discussing digitalization and sustainability topics in greater depth at other events in the dialogue series.
