The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has published the latest long report on the availability of broadband in Germany. It presents the results of data surveys on broadband availability in Germany as at the end of 2020.

More than half of German households are supplied with gigabit bandwidths. As in the previous six months, the availability of connections with 1,000 Mbit/s recorded the highest growth rate nationwide. These are two important findings from the long report on broadband expansion by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). Following the short report that has already been published, the long report primarily presents individual evaluations of broadband availability in the federal states as well as extensive maps and additional detailed information on the topic of gigabit. The report also includes key figures on the development of broadband availability since the end of 2018 in the federal states and by spatial category.

The latest figures demonstrate the continuing momentum in broadband expansion throughout Germany, both in cities and rural areas. The availability of connections with over 1,000 Mbit/s increased again in the second half of 2020 and amounted to 59.2% at the time of the survey. This means that more than half of all German households have access to bandwidths in the gigabit range.

Broadband expansion at schools and hospitals is also proving successful and around 40% of locations have access to bandwidths of at least 1,000 Mbit/s.

The Broadband Atlas is the central information medium on current broadband coverage in Germany. The results of the report on broadband expansion are based on voluntary data provided by broadband providers. Interactive maps in the broadband atlas can be used to identify gaps in coverage and derive decision-making aids for expansion and funding measures. The broadband atlas also shows all projects in the federal funding program as well as the expansion areas. It is available to all interested parties free of charge.

The operation of the broadband atlas and the survey on broadband availability in Germany is carried out by aconium GmbH on behalf of the BMVI. The broadband atlas and the results reports are available at www.breitbandatlas.de.
