In July, Germany took another big step towards its goal of nationwide coverage with high-performance fiber optic networks. This is exemplified by 67 milestones in broadband expansion: 45 positive funding decisions handed over, 17 groundbreaking ceremonies and five start-ups in eleven federal states. Once all construction measures have been completed, almost 69,000 previously underserved households, companies, schools and other institutional customers will be supplied with fiber optics at these locations alone.
The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) is supporting these expansion projects with over 376 million euros from the federal government’s broadband funding. With this funding as well as supplementary state funding programs and the municipal contribution, the BMVI, the states and the municipalities are jointly creating the basis for nationwide and future-proof broadband coverage and thus paving the way for the gigabit society.
A high-performance fibre optic infrastructure not only enables effective working in the office and home office, the digitalization of teaching and high-resolution video streaming. It is also a prerequisite for digital transformation, forms the backbone of future-proof mobile communications coverage and enables innovative data services from smart homes to smart regions.
