Three municipalities and one town in the Wurzener Land region are creating their own fiber optic network, providing an additional 4,300 households, 317 companies and fifteen schools with gigabit bandwidths.

Following the kick-off event in the Lossatal municipality at the end of August, the municipality of Bennewitz is now following suit with a groundbreaking ceremony: this marks the start of supplying 786 households, 22 companies and two schools with gigabit bandwidth.

Saxony’s Minister President Michael Kretschmer, District Administrator Henry Graichen from the district of Leipzig, the mayors of Bennewitz and Lossatal, Bernd Laqua and Uwe Weigelt, and aconium Managing Director Tim Brauckmüller were among those who attended the start of construction.

The expansion with a future-proof and sustainable digital infrastructure should support the economic and regional development of Wurzener Land and position Bennewitz and the other municipalities and towns as a location with an optimal information and communication infrastructure.

Tim Brauckmüller praised the extraordinary cooperation between the municipalities in the regional development: “Such large projects place high demands on the municipalities involved in terms of preparation and planning. In Wurzener Land, four projects were coordinated in parallel and from a single source. This was a major challenge that is now paying off for many households, companies, schools and therefore the entire region.”

The town of Wurzen and the municipalities of Bennewitz, Thallwitz and Lossatal have joined forces to expand broadband and founded Wurzener Land-Werke Glasfaser GmbH. On behalf of the municipalities and with the help of state and federal funding, it implements the fiber optic expansion and leases the networks to a telecommunications company from the region. In return, they receive around 17 million euros from the federal government’s broadband funding and around 11.3 million euros from the state of Saxony. Their own municipal contribution amounts to over 3.1 million euros.
