On Monday, October 9, 2017, the ground-breaking ceremony took place in expansion area number 4 in the Main-Tauber district.
The fourth of nine construction phases for the fiber optic expansion in Freudenberg-Ebenheid and Külsheim kicked off on 9 October 2017. Around 9.8 kilometers of fibre optic cable were laid for this purpose. From April 2018, a further 1,200 households will benefit from faster internet.
The official ground-breaking ceremony for the construction work was attended by District Administrator Reinhard Frank, Mayor Roger Henning and Veit Steinle, Branch Manager of aconium GmbH, among others. aconium GmbH is an entrusted project sponsor of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. As part of this project sponsorship, it provides funding.
The expansion plan in the Main-Tauber district is to be completed in a total of nine stages. The latest technology will be used to minimize the impact on people and traffic. A total of 43 kilometers of fiber optic cable have already been laid in the first three expansion areas, which required 39 kilometers of underground construction. The network expansion should be fully completed by the end of 2018. By then, a total of around 47,190 households and businesses in 18 towns and municipalities will have access to high-speed internet. The federal government is funding the project with 50%, the state of Baden-Württemberg with 20% and the rest is being shared equally by the 18 municipalities in the district.
The approval from the federal funding program of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) provides technology-neutral funding for network expansion. A total of around four billion euros is available for broadband funding from federal funds. The federal program provides underserved areas with network access of at least 50 megabits per second. All municipalities have already received funding decisions for preparatory planning services of up to 50,000 euros each from this program. Tim Brauckmüller, Managing Director of aconium GmbH:
“What applies to private households applies even more to companies. Many business applications sometimes require high bandwidths and demand high-performance infrastructures – especially in rural areas! Broadband access infrastructure is needed there in particular to make the location competitive and attractive for companies and families.”
