GRACE
Growing Climate Resilience in Remote rural Areas through Community Empowerment
GRACE supports remote and rural regions in Europe in increasing their climate resilience. Nature-based solutions, digital tools and local participation are used to develop practical approaches for better responding to extreme weather events.

Years
GRACE aims to strengthen the adaptive capacity of Europe’s Remote Rural Areas (RRAs) in the face of climate change. As extreme weather events such as floods, droughts and wildfires become more frequent, the project supports those regions that are particularly vulnerable due to limited institutional capacities, low levels of investment and ongoing depopulation.
The project develops and tests innovative, nature-based climate adaptation solutions that combine digital technologies, new governance models and circular-economy principles. In close cooperation with 27 partners from 16 countries, these approaches are co-developed and tested with five Demonstrator Regions (DRs) in Portugal, Italy, Austria, Denmark and Sweden, and prepared for subsequent replication in five Replication Regions (RRs) in Greece, Slovakia, Ireland, Latvia and Ukraine.
In parallel, GRACE strengthens local capacities through knowledge transfer, citizen engagement and targeted training. In doing so, the project not only helps reduce climate risks but also opens up new economic opportunities and creates transferable models for resilient rural areas across Europe.
Objectives
The goal of GRACE is to enhance climate resilience in rural regions across Europe by increasing citizen participation, co-developing locally tailored nature-based climate adaptation solutions, implementing capacity-building measures, and providing digital climate adaptation tools.
