Lighting the Baltic Sea Region – Cities accelerate the deployment of sustainable and smart urban lighting solutions

The project

By deploying sustainable lighting solutions, cities can realize enormous energy saving potentials. Modern LED lighting, for instance, has a saving potential of up to 50% compared to conventional systems. When used intelligently, modern urban lighting solutions can also make substantial contributions to providing liveable, safe and pleasant urban spaces. Particularly in the Baltic Sea region with its long and dark winters, this aspect plays a key role in urban planning and design. Nevertheless, sustainable and intelligent lighting solutions have not been widely deployed in the region so far.

This is exactly where the LUCIA project comes into play. The project partners aim to provide municipalities in the Baltic Sea region and beyond with up-to-date knowledge on sustainable urban lighting. When processing this knowledge, LUCIA partners will cover aspects of environment, technology, economy and social acceptance. To provide a tangible experience of its potential, innovative energy efficient lighting solutions will be installed in six pilot sites around the Baltic Sea. These pilot installations in Hamburg (Germany), Tallinn (Estonia), Porvoo (Finland), Jūrmala (Latvia), Albertslund (Denmark) and St. Petersburg (Russia) will serve as beacon projects which can be replicated in other municipalities.

The LUCIA project is implemented within the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme by the following partners: Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Borough of Altona (Germany, Lead Partner), Tallinn University of Technology (Estonia), Posintra Ltd. (Finland), City of Porvoo (Finland), Municipality of Tallinn (Estonia), Riga Planning Region (Latvia), Gate 21 (Denmark), Jūrmala City Council (Latvia), City of Gothenburg, Urban Transport Administration (Sweden), City of Albertslund (Denmark) and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (Russian Federation).

Goals

LUCIA helps municipalities around the Baltic Sea region to unlock the enormous potential of energy efficient urban lighting solutions. To realise this, LUCIA partners will provide municipalities with state-of-the-art knowledge and showcase the potential of innovative urban lighting through pilot installations in six cities.
