Saarland: “Digital municipalities” pilot project launched
In mid-March, Saarland launched the “Digital Model Municipalities” project, another key milestone on the road to digital transformation in municipal administrations. The program aims to support cities and municipalities in offering their administrative services digitally and in a future-oriented manner. As part of “Digital Municipalities”, this project is to be implemented in selected areas in the four model municipalities of Bexbach, Mettlach, Nalbach and Tholey. The focus is on modernizing the IT infrastructure, digitizing internal administrative processes and digitizing administrative services for citizens and businesses.
Once the project has been completed, the findings and exemplary implementations acquired in the pilot project will serve as the basis for a service that will be made available to all Saarland municipalities on a voluntary basis for use across the board. A total of EUR 1.46 million is available in the state budget for the “Digital Model Municipalities” task force and the development of corresponding IT systems. The programme complements existing cooperation between the state and municipalities in the field of digitalization, such as the Saarland eGovernment Pact or the IT Cooperation Council.
