Various strategies and innovative approaches are needed to counteract the negative effects of ongoing structural change. In the city of Dessau-Roßlau, for example, the change is making itself felt in the city center in the form of empty stores, so that not only the attractiveness of the shopping and visitor experience, but also the quality of local economic and social life is impaired. There is a danger of a self-reinforcing process of increasing desolation. With the “NeuSTADT-Meile Dessau-Roßlau” project, aconium GmbH will support the city in this process over the next two years. Implement urban development measures to revitalize the city center.
With the “NeuSTADT-Meile” project, the city of Dessau-Roßlau aims to identify and harness existing potential. The various measures include the preparation of feasibility studies on key urban properties, the establishment of development-steering institutions such as the NeuSTADT agency, the temporary rental and revitalization of unused spaces and investments to prepare vacant properties for cultural activities, for example. In addition, there are extensive marketing and public relations measures. The aim is to find new uses for vacant properties, ideas and creators into the project area and to increase the quality of stay through greening and design measures. Overall, this will support the perception and appeal of Dessau’s city center in the region.
The project is funded by the federal program “Zukunftsfähige Innenstädte und Zentren” (ZIZ) of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB). On behalf of the city of Dessau-Roßlau, aconium is responsible for the overall project management for the implementation of the funding program. This includes coordinating the stakeholders involved as well as project and funding management, including monitoring and reporting on progress. In addition to the technical project implementation, aconium GmbH also supports the individual project sponsors in the technical implementation of the various urban development measures of the “NeuSTADT-Meile”. The funding offers the city the opportunity to meet its challenges with concrete and innovative measures and to provide positive development impetus for sustainable and resilient inner city development.
