The ground-breaking ceremony at Sodingen secondary school marked the start of the expansion of the federal broadband funding program in the city of Herne. The ground-breaking ceremony is an important milestone on the way to faster Internet for the citizens of the city. Herne’s schools are set to benefit from this. After all, the coronavirus pandemic has once again brought the importance of digital learning into focus.
“The coronavirus pandemic has once again shown us all how important digital learning is. On the one hand, this requires the appropriate pedagogical concepts, but on the other hand, it also requires the digital infrastructure. We are now continuing to improve this,” said Andreas Merkendorf, Head of the Schools and Further Education Department.
With the federal funding of around six million euros, almost 1,360 households, 200 companies, 16 schools and 2 care facilities will be connected to the new broadband network once the project is completed. This will involve around 63 km of underground construction and 75 distribution boxes in the city.
