On March 21, 2017, Alexander Dobrindt, Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, and Enak Ferlemann, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), handed over 165 funding decisions from the federal funding program for broadband expansion.

Over 935 million euros will flow into the expansion of broadband infrastructure in Germany in order to open up underserved regions with super-fast broadband. According to Dobrindt, this will trigger a total investment of 2.3 billion euros and 205,000 kilometers of new fibre optic cable will be laid.

With a maximum of 15 million euros, funded municipalities and districts can now invest in the laying of fiber optic cables and the upgrading of existing cable branches. The funding rate is between 50 and 70 percent of the eligible costs. In combination with state funding, projects can receive up to 90 percent funding for their investments.

aconium GmbH is the project sponsor of the federal broadband funding program and is therefore responsible for approving funding applications.
