Clear upward trend: Almost half of all German private households have gigabit connections

The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has published the latest long report on the availability of broadband in Germany. This presents the results of the data collection for broadband availability in Germany as at the end of 2019. Compared to the previously published short report, the detailed long report primarily presents individual evaluations of the federal states as well as extensive maps on broadband availability in the various broadband classes and additional detailed information on the topic of gigabit. The current report shows a positive trend nationwide.
The availability of connections with more than 1000 Mbit/s increased by around 16 percentage points compared to the previous year to over 43%. This means that just under half of all German households have gigabit connections. This bandwidth class saw the highest growth in the past six months. The gigabit strategy for schools, hospitals and business parks is also proving successful: well over 80% of hospitals and schools in Germany have bandwidths of at least 50 Mbit/s, and almost three quarters of all schools, hospitals and business parks even have bandwidths of at least 100 Mbit/s. The results are based on voluntary data provided by broadband providers.
Interactive maps in the Breitbandatlas (broadband atlas) can be used to identify gaps in coverage and derive decision-making aids for expansion and funding measures. The broadband atlas also offers the option of displaying projects in the federal funding program for broadband expansion and shows the expansion areas. The survey was carried out by aconium GmbH on behalf of the BMVI. The broadband atlas and the current report are available at www.breitbandatlas.de.
