Corona makes it obvious: we must seize the opportunities of digitalization

The coronavirus pandemic is progressing worldwide and more and more people are working from home. The enormous increase in the use of video conferencing in particular is putting the current network infrastructure in Germany to the test. At the same time, we are still far from fully exploiting the opportunities of digitalization for the economy and society: artificial intelligence, sensor technology, but also the use of telemedicine such as video consultations or online-supported laboratory analyses, intelligent traffic control and many other topics have largely not yet been implemented across the board – but could make an important contribution to overcoming the current situation. Some applications, such as the brand-new “Corona Dashboard”, which is based on a geographic information system (GIS), already show what is possible today.

As a valued and respected partner of the public sector, aconium is responsible for the implementation – and in particular the allocation of funds – of the federal broadband funding program and is absolutely convinced that its actions make sense. After all, the faster Germany is supplied with ultra-fast broadband connections in urban and rural areas, the sooner equal living conditions will be created in urban and rural areas. Comprehensive fibre optic networks are the essential basic infrastructure for the digitalization of the economy and society and also for high-performance mobile communications via 5G – because fibre optics offer practically unlimited transmission capacities.

But – and this is often forgotten – more is needed: “We not only need a nationwide fibre optic infrastructure, but also a large number of small and medium-sized data centers in our country, the corresponding power lines and the expansion of existing infrastructures in the central network nodes,” emphasizes aconium Managing Director Tim Brauckmüller. “And last but not least, it is important to recruit and train a sufficient number of specialists for the expansion of fiber optics and for the entire ICT sector.”

The nationwide expansion of fibre optics and the digitalization of the country based on it will benefit all areas of life. Brauckmüller: “Broadband expansion must be seen as regional development. Hospitals, business parks, schools, social facilities – we need to take the entire range of public institutions with us.”

The more than 260 employees at aconium GmbH are therefore working hard, even in the current situation – almost exclusively from home – to further promote the nationwide expansion of fiber optics in Germany. After all, countless jobs depend on broadband expansion, network operation and the entire ICT sector in Germany. Securing and further increasing these jobs is the motivation for one of the leading service providers in the field of digitalization. What’s more, the broadband infrastructure available today already ensures vital production processes – especially in times of crisis.

Corona will not stop the expansion of fiber optics in Germany. On the contrary, aconium GmbH is doing everything in its power to ensure that this new, high-performance, future-proof infrastructure is available nationwide as quickly as possible. Also so that our country can get through future crises in the best possible way.
