Start of the 2nd season on the topic of “Common good and network city/city network”

With the “Smart Cities Model Projects” funding programme, the BMI (Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community) supports municipalities in recognising the opportunities of digitalisation and strategically addressing the associated challenges. The second round of the funding programme began on 7 February 2020.

In the “Smart Cities Model Projects”, strategic and integrated smart city approaches are to be developed and tested as examples for German municipalities. In this way, a wide range of learning examples can be created for the entire spectrum of municipalities. The solutions developed should be scalable and replicable so that the results can also be used by other municipalities. The funded municipalities are obliged to actively participate in the exchange of experience beyond the funded pilot projects and to make funded software solutions available as open source or free software. Knowledge transfer is a central component of the “Smart Cities pilot projects”.

In the first round of the funding programme, 13 cities were selected. They are testing measures on how digitalisation in municipalities can be designed sustainably and intelligently in the sense of integrated urban development and which organisational and structural changes in the administrative organisation are necessary for this.

For the second round, municipal, interdisciplinary and spatial strategies for urban development as well as their implementation for the sustainable design of digitalisation and the necessary development of expertise will be funded.

Applications must be submitted by April 20, 2020.
