Launch of the mobile communications sustainability competition
Slowly but surely, things are getting tight for the white spots in Germany: more and more gaps in mobile coverage are disappearing, partly due to the expansion of mobile coverage funded by the federal government. Nevertheless, some of them persist – for example, because the electricity connection to the radio stations is too expensive or due to geographical peculiarities. To ensure that these areas still have access to high-speed internet and mobile communications, Mobilfunkinfrastrukturgesellschaft mbH (MIG) and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) have launched the Mobile Communications Sustainability Competition – greenpower4tower. The aim of the campaign is to identify and implement innovative solutions for the CO2-neutral power supply of mobile communications sites.
The call is primarily aimed at citizens. As part of the sustainability competition, they have been able to submit their solutions and ideas to MIG online since August 19, 2023. Particularly promising proposals will not only be rewarded with prize money of 10,000 euros, but also the opportunity to turn the ideas into a pilot project. A jury of independent experts from the fields of telecommunications, energy and science as well as representatives of MIG, the BMDV and the participating federal ministries will decide which concepts are eligible. Important factors in the selection process include the maturity of the idea and its feasibility in the short term. In addition, the solution must not yet be on the market. Competition entries can be submitted until October 8, 2023 at 11:59 pm. The evaluation and award ceremony will take place on October 28, 2023.
