Fiber optic expansion in Germany: opportunities and challenges in a dynamic market environment

The expansion of fiber optic networks in Germany has picked up speed. According to VATM and Dialog Consult, telecommunications companies are investing more money than ever before in the expansion of their networks, at EUR 11.6 billion. By the end of 2022 alone, more than 12 million pure fiber optic connections are expected to be technically available in Germany. However, it is not only the telecommunications industry that is increasingly pushing the rollout of FTTB and H networks. Consortia from the financial and insurance sectors are also investing in the fiber optic market, with the result that a large number of joint ventures and consortiums with different strategies, objectives and expansion models are now promoting the rollout of fiber optic to the building across the whole of Germany. Often hand in hand, sometimes in strong competition with each other.

The overall picture is one of a highly dynamic market environment, which we would like to shed more light on in future issues of the atene newsletter in order to not only present the players with their expansion projects on site in the regions, but also to take a closer look at the opportunities and challenges associated with fiber optic expansion in detail. The new series will kick off with an introductory overview article describing the status quo of commercial activities in the fiber optic market in Germany.
