Broadband networks form the digital backbone of society and the expansion of fiber optic networks is one of the most important infrastructure issues in Germany. The availability of high-performance internet connections is an important location factor for the economy, the basis for networking research institutions and a central element for citizens’ participation in digital services. The federal government’s gigabit strategy therefore envisages a nationwide expansion of fiber optic networks by 2030. By the end of 2025, 50% of households and companies should already have a connection to the fiber optic network.
