5G campus networks technology program launched

The technology program “Campus networks based on 5G communication technologies (5G campus networks)” was launched at the beginning of this year. The aim of the program initiated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) is to develop and test innovative solutions for private 5G networks, so-called campus networks. The central core project of the funding program is the lead project CampusOS, which was launched at the beginning of the year under the leadership of the Fraunhofer Institutes Heinrich-Hertz and FOKUS. The aim of CampusOS is to research the development of a modular ecosystem and a technology kit for 5G campus networks based on open radio technologies and interoperable network components. In addition, six satellite projects will be launched in April of this year to test further industry-specific solutions for 5G campus networks in the application areas of smart hospitals, disaster control and fire departments, industry, logistics and robotics as well as shipyards and shipbuilding, and to validate the concepts developed as part of CampusOS (reference architecture, building block catalogs, operator models) for practical suitability. A total of more than 50 partners from industry and research are involved in the six satellite programs and the reference project. The duration of the individual projects is 36 months. The total funding volume of the new technology program amounts to approx. 33 million euros. Further information on the research focus can be found on the BMWK website.
