On 29.01.2018, the first symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the broadband expansion in the district of Ammerland took place in Edewecht. In the presence of the mayor of the municipality of Edewecht Petra Lausch, Klaus Groß (mayor of the town of Westerstede), Matthias Huber (mayor of the municipality of Apen), Patricia Bonney (head of the structural development department at the Weser-Ems Regional Development Office), Dr. Thomas Jürgens (District of Ammerland, Department for Construction/Environment/Order), District Administrator Jörg Bensberg, Dr. Arno Schilling (Mayor of Bad Zwischenahn), Member of the State Parliament Jens Ahrends and representatives of the telecommunications company carrying out the expansion, the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony was held so that the excavators of the civil engineering companies in Ammerland can now begin their work.
District Administrator Jörg Bensberg was extremely pleased that the broadband expansion southwest of the A 28 federal highway is now starting and that many Ammerland households can now benefit from a faster Internet connection. Stefan Molkentin (Regional Manager North of aconium GmbH, project sponsor for the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure) emphasized the goal-oriented cooperation with the district of Ammerland at the subsequent press conference. The forward-looking expansion will ensure that more Ammerland households are connected to broadband services as quickly as possible.
Thanks to the district’s successful application for the federal broadband funding program, the federal government is subsidizing the infrastructure project with over 1.3 million euros. Further funding will be provided by the state of Lower Saxony. The district and the local authorities are contributing to the necessary co-financing. By the time the project is completed, a total of 1,361 households will be able to benefit from a faster Internet connection over the next one and a half years.
