On 3 July 2018, the Schleswig-Holstein municipality of Schaalby was the venue for the start of the expansion of the Südangeln broadband association’s fiber optic network: The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the start of broadband expansion in the Südangeln district took place near the gymnasium of Boy-Lornsen elementary school.
The infrastructure project will lay the foundations for the region’s digital prospects, as the availability of higher transmission rates will increase the attractiveness and future viability of the region as well as the quality of life of local residents. This will benefit both private households and businesses in the municipalities of Böklund, Brodersby-Goltoft, Havetoft, Idstedt, Klappholz, Neuberend, Nübel, Schaalby, Stolk, Struxdorf, Süderfahrenstedt, Taarstedt, Tolk, Twedt and Uelsby. In the expansion with the operator model, the Südangeln broadband association is responsible for the expansion of the fiber optic network, taking alternative installation methods into account. Association chairman Andreas Thiessen emphasized the importance of broadband connections for the region, for example in order to be able to provide local guests not only with temporary and volume-dependent Internet, but also with a continuous gigabit network.
At the ground-breaking ceremony, Johannes Lüneberg from the Broadband Competence Center Schleswig-Holstein positively emphasized the rapid processing of the project by the special-purpose association. Also present were Johannes Callsen (MdL), district director Heiko Albert, head of the district Edgar Petersen, the mayors of the municipalities, Matthias Schulze-Mantei (representative of aconium GmbH), the official project sponsor of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) as well as representatives of the association administration and the operating, executing and planning company.
The BMVI is subsidizing the expansion project with over 7.9 million euros as part of the funding application for the federal broadband funding programme. By the time the project is completed, 415 kilometers of ducts and 1,453 kilometers of fiber optic cable will have been laid. More than 4,452 households, 51 companies and 19 schools will benefit from data transfer rates of at least 50 Mbit/s.
