The nationwide roll-out of fibre optics in Germany is progressing rapidly: in the last two weeks, another eight ground-breaking ceremonies and three commissioning events have taken place.
The Ennepe-Ruhr district (North Rhine-Westphalia) kicked things off on Tuesday, 20 October 2020. Once the construction work is complete, more than 4,209 households, nine companies and one school will be connected to high-speed internet. On Wednesday, another gigabit expansion project was launched in Jossgrund, in the Main-Kinzig district (Hesse). Here, 143 companies will benefit from the fiber optic expansion. On Thursday and Friday, October 22 and 23, 2020, the district of Wolfenbüttel (Lower Saxony) set the course for the digital future. The ground-breaking ceremonies in Sickte and Burgdorf will connect 477 households, 129 companies and 20 institutional customers to the high-speed network. The fiber optic expansion in Penkun, Vorpommern-Greifswald district (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) also began on Friday, 23 October 2020. Once the project has been completed, more than 15,800 households, over 1,400 companies and 139 schools will benefit from a fast internet connection. The district of Kaiserslautern in Rhineland-Palatinate kicked off its broadband expansion with a ground-breaking ceremony on October 28, 2020. With the help of federal funding from the BMVI, more than 3,700 households, 100 companies and 116 institutional customers, including 36 schools and 15 hospitals, will be connected with fiber optics. The new network was put into operation in the Malsch industrial estate in the district of Karlsruhe on Friday, October 30, 2020. Following completion of the construction work, 43 companies and 43 institutional customers will be able to use the schnelen fiber optic connection. Three commissioning events also took place: On Tuesday, October 20, 2020, in Wolfschlugen, district of Esslingen (Baden-Württemberg). There, 1,376 households, 142 companies and twelve institutional customers will be connected to the high-speed network. The gigabit expansion started in Klein Ammensleben, Börde district (Saxony-Anhalt), where more than 3,300 households, 237 companies and 35 institutional customers will be connected to fiber optics once construction work is complete. In Frankfurt/Oder in Brandenburg, more than 2,300 households, 314 companies, 28 schools and 31 administrative buildings will also benefit from the fiber optic connection when it goes live.
