Green hydrogen in the transportation sector – kick-off event for the HyTrEc2 webinar series
How suitable is hydrogen for everyday use? In a new series of events, representatives of model municipalities and researchers from the European North Sea region report on their experiences as part of the EU Hydrogen Transport Economy (HyTrEc2) project. The municipalities of Aberdeen and Groningen kicked things off on May 26, 2021.
Hydrogen will be one of the most important energy sources of the future and hydrogen-powered vehicles are fundamental to achieving the EU’s energy and climate protection targets. Currently, over 90% of transportation in Europe is still petroleum-based. In this context, the conversion of larger vehicles to hydrogen drives in particular offers real opportunities to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
At the kick-off event, the city of Aberdeen City in Scotland and the Dutch municipality of Groningen reported on their experiences in the everyday use of hydrogen vehicles in public transport and heavy goods traffic. What challenges do the municipalities face when introducing this new technology? How are the vehicles proving themselves in practice? What successes have been achieved? What goals are being pursued? The participants explored these questions together on May 26, 2021 and reported on their experiences.
- Louise Napier/Rachael Goodfellow (Aberdeen City Council)
“Aberdeen has been a pioneer in hydrogen since 2013 and has one of the largest and most diverse fleets of hydrogen vehicles in Europe. Aberdeen City Council, as lead partner in the HyTrEc2 project, is actively working to create a hydrogen transportation economy in the North Sea region.” - Gerrit Griffioen (Municipality of Groningen)
“The future of hydrogen in Groningen, how Groningen is working to actively participate in the creation of a hydrogen transport economy in the North Sea region and how experiences from the HyTrEc2 project have been shared.”
In upcoming events, aspects ranging from the development of hydrogen supply chains, the production and storage of green hydrogen to the training and further education of specialists will be discussed together with European experts and the experiences of pioneers in these fields will be shared with interested stakeholders.
The target group:
National and international government representatives, political decision-makers, national H2 networks; manufacturers of electrolysis and fuel cell vehicles and the general public
The HyTrEc2 project context:
The partners in the HyTrEc2 project are taking a broad-based approach to developing the North Sea region into a competence center for green hydrogen and promoting the FCEV market in the long term.
