North Rhine-Westphalia: Mobile communications pact extended until 2024

The mobile communications pact concluded in 2018 between the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the network operators Deutsche Telekom, Telefónica Deutschland and Vodafone will be extended. The partners involved announced this on September 2, 2021 in Düsseldorf and jointly presented the mobile communications pact 2.0. While the original agreement from 2018 primarily provided for the initial promotion of a rapid nationwide expansion of mobile coverage, the focus in Germany’s most populous federal state is now to be placed on new objectives that provide for further improvements in mobile coverage. Among other things, the new agreement focuses on

  • State funding for mobile communications coordinators at district and city level to support local mobile communications expansion
  • The creation of a largely nationwide 5G infrastructure by the end of 2024 by increasing the total number of 5G extensions to over 10,300 locations
  • Improving the quality of LTE coverage by implementing at least 7,500 additional LTE expansion measures by the end of 2024

The agreement on the continuation of the mobile communications pact (Mobilfunkpakt NRW 2.0) provides a complete overview of all measures taken and objectives.
