LIHYP – Linking Hydrogen Power Potentials

Project Content

The LIHYP project is a European cooperation initiative that is being implemented as part of the EU’s Interreg North Sea programme. aconium is one of 18 companies and institutions from Germany, Belgium, Denmark, France and the Netherlands that are working together in the project until November 2026.

The North Sea region is strategically promoting green hydrogen for the crucial decarbonisation of the energy sector. With offshore hubs and recent agreements between the North Sea countries for hybrid off-shore cooperation projects aiming to become the “Green Powerhouse of Europe”, the region aims to supply the EU with green electricity and reduce import dependency. Despite numerous European initiatives for regional H2 development supported by national and EU programmes, few focus on knowledge exchange and interregional optimisation – this is where LIHYP comes in and aims to close this gap.

As part of the project, various pilot projects on the use of hydrogen will be carried out in the partner countries, e.g. hydrogen cargo bikes, hydrogen-powered goods trains, hydrogen bus stations and living labs. A hydrogen platform will be set up for the North Sea region in order to network the relevant interest groups. Furthermore, a database for the demand, production and supply of hydrogen is to be created. Various roadmaps for business models will help entrepreneurs, investors and authorities to plan for hydrogen in the North Sea region. Together, all partners will take the first steps towards cross-border system integration for hydrogen infrastructures, harmonisation and standardisation.

Objectives

The aim of LIHYP is to bring together hydrogen demand and supply as well as interest groups and thus create the potential for future, coordinated cooperation. The project initiates opportunities to accelerate the market introduction of hydrogen applications leading to regional hydrogen value chains in the North Sea region.

Tasks of aconium GmbH

aconium GmbH supports the regional development of an H2 network which is based on an existing mesh of economic and public actors. By this, we promote capacity building for the hydrogen infrastructure envisaged by LIHYP. In addition, aconium is working with other partners to create interregional H2 dynamic roadmaps. In doing so, we prepare analyses of the status quo of the German hydrogen economy, existing political goals and their implementation by 2030.
