Munich test field – pilot test of urban automated road traffic in the state capital of Munich
Project content
The mobility industry is facing a comprehensive transformation process towards emission-free, automated and connected mobility. The control of emission limits and road safety in urban areas are increasingly a topic of public and political debate. Technical innovations in this area harbor opportunities and risks for our mobility of the future.
As part of the TEMPUS funding project, the traffic effects of automated and connected driving (AVF) on efficiency and safety as well as on the acceptance of other road users and citizens in particular are to be investigated on the basis of extensive driving tests on the real road network in the Munich conurbation.
The cooperative research project TEMPUS was initiated by the City of Munich (LHM) in September 2020 and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport with EUR 11.47 million. Under the consortium leadership of the LHM’s Mobility Department, a further twelve project partners from administration, research, business and industry are involved in the project, contributing their expertise to the various project tasks.
In essence, a test field in the north of Munich is being defined, set up and transferred into a reference architecture across all local authorities and thus across all public authorities. In addition to studies on the various technical and infrastructural requirements, the traffic impact of AVF on vulnerable road users (especially cyclists and pedestrians) will also be examined. A practice-oriented guide for municipalities and public authorities will also summarize findings on the expandability and growth process of fields of application for AVF. The aim is to show how test fields can be set up efficiently beyond municipal boundaries.
Goals
The aim of TEMPUS is the realistic testing of automated and networked vehicles (AVF) for motorized and non-motorized private transport (IV) and local public transport (ÖPNV) in real traffic situations.
