Public Energy Alternatives

The Project

A rising use of alternative, regional renewable energy sources and more energy efficiency is an important issue for municipalities, i.e. to meet the aims of the European Agenda 2020, to lower public energy costs and to achieve security in energy provision.

Within the PEA project 21 partners from various scientific areas of expertise from six countries (Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland) around the Baltic Sea worked out strategies and pilot projects to make the existing and potential energy saving capacities visible. The project that was running from 2009 until 2012 also provided the opportunity to exchange experiences and results within the partnership and beyond. Lead partner of PEA was the municipality of Wittenberge, which was supported by aconium as an external project manager on transnational level.

Goals

The main aim of the PEA project was to foster regional development through energy related improvement of value-added chains. The energy sector can be an important motor for sustainable development of the regions that positively affect the economic situation of the regions. This includes reflecting on the value-added chains and a holistic consideration of the regions. For some of the partners this has led to establishing energy self-sufficient regions. New solutions are already far developed; the aim of PEA is to collect, exchange and translate these findings and to make them usable for regions all over the BSR. This is also fostered by new training modules for local authorities, energy related staff (e.g. facility manager) and other users and decision makers, enabling them to implement and further develop strategies and measures. The Baltic Energy Compendium, a comprehensive guide, facilitates rethinking and remodeling of regional energy policy.
