Future Spaces Lower Saxony – Sustainable design of urban transport in Walsrode

The Future Spaces Lower Saxony program is aimed at small and medium-sized towns in Lower Saxony as well as municipalities and joint municipalities in rural areas. The aim of the program is to initiate urban-regional cooperation and the development of innovative projects that help to strengthen the anchor function of medium-sized and basic centers for the surrounding rural areas.

Funding is provided for specific projects that can apply for funding on certain key dates.

One of the selected projects is the “Sustainable design of urban transport in Walsrode” in the city of Walsrode. The aim of the project is to sensitize and motivate citizens to the topic of cycling – especially with regard to climate-friendly mobility. In addition, part of the 2022 cycle path concept is to be implemented within this framework.

Goals

As in many rural regions, people in the town of Walsrode predominantly use their own cars as a means of transportation. This has several negative consequences for the town, such as traffic jams, a lack of parking space, higher exhaust emissions and a lower quality of life. In addition to motorists and residents, cyclists also suffer from this situation, as they are sometimes endangered and hindered by the traffic situation.

The overarching goal of the “Sustainable design of urban transport in Walsrode” project is to significantly increase the proportion of bicycles in the overall inner-city transport mix and thus create a climate-friendly alternative to motorized private transport.

The project raises awareness of cycling and contributes to more climate-friendly mobility. It will also significantly improve the quality of life in the city center by reducing noise pollution and creating a greater sense of safety when cycling. In addition to measures to improve cycling, further measures are being developed for the future-oriented development of inner-city traffic, including a digital traffic management system based on the LoRaWAN network already installed, which should help to reduce parking search traffic in the future.
