TU Ilmenau researches future 6G mobile communications generation
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is providing 250 million euros in funding for the establishment of four large-scale national research networks for research into 6G mobile communications technology. Ilmenau University of Technology in Thuringia has now announced that it will be involved in two of the 6G research hubs of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research: Open6GHub for research into modern communication networks and 6GEM for the development of next-generation mobile communication systems with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainable radiation protection. The 6G research hubs are also intended to produce innovations in new communication technologies, such as wireless data transmission and fiber optic-based networks.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s forecast, 6G will be the “high-performance mobile data technology of the future” and revolutionize the way we communicate over the next decade. The upcoming sixth generation of mobile communications is expected to transmit data more than 100 times faster than with the current 5G standard as early as 2030 – while at the same time offering greater energy efficiency, reliability and compliance with radiation protection limits. Information on all 6G research hubs funded by the BMBF can be found here.
