The goal of the gigabit strategy is within reach. Since its publication in summer 2022, 87% of the measures have been successfully launched or completed. This is according to the latest progress report from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs. Federal Minister Volker Wissing commented: “Germany is right on track with the expansion of digital infrastructure. In all likelihood, we will achieve our interim goal of providing every second household with a fiber optic connection by the end of 2025. We are among the European leaders in the expansion of the 5G mobile network. The key to this success is our gigabit strategy, which we are implementing with determination and consistency. The gigabit strategy is driving network expansion forward. It specifies concrete measures and timetables against which we will be measured. The expansion of the digital infrastructure has never been as fast as under this government. But we must not rest on our laurels; we want to maintain the pace and momentum. With the progress report, we are also presenting 35 new measures that complement our gigabit strategy and further improve the framework conditions for network expansion.”

Transparent progress report and 35 other measures

In order to maintain and even increase the pace, a further 35 new measures are being implemented. These complement the gigabit strategy and create improved framework conditions for network expansion. These include a nationwide mobile network measurement week to collect data on mobile network coverage. Here, the federal states will be helped to carry out broad-based and structured measurement campaigns with the help of the “Funkloch App” in order to improve a consumer-oriented presentation of coverage. In addition, an image campaign on the advantages of a fiber optic connection is planned and an increased focus on the expansion of fiber optic cabling within buildings, especially in rented apartments. In addition, the BMDV and the Federal Network Agency will work with the industry to develop a concept for copper-glass migration. Approval processes are also to be accelerated and streamlined, the self-economic expansion supported and the interaction with funding improved. To this end, information tools and services will be optimized, alternative installation methods will be reinforced and networking between all parties involved will be intensified. Topics such as fiber optic dual expansion, skills shortages and resilience are particularly important in the exchange within the industry. The gigabit strategy comprises 100 measures to accelerate the expansion of the digital infrastructure. Of these, 87 have already been fully implemented or are in the process of being implemented, while a further 13 measures are in progress. The progress report and monitoring provide further information on the implementation status of the gigabit strategy.
