Today, a reliable and efficient infrastructure is one of the central keys to a future-oriented and permanently competitive economy. This is particularly true for the maritime and port industry. The current telecommunications standard 5G offers the opportunity for a rapid leap in the development of technical possibilities, so that corresponding services and products are now being tested in the Western Pomerania region as part of the 5G-PortVG joint project, which will enable new applications in the port sector. aconium is supporting the three-year project, which is being funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV).

New 5G-based services and products are being tested in three lead projects, which will serve as user-centered maritime assistance systems in the future. On this basis, new applications can be established in the port sector and the added value of 5G technology can be demonstrated, particularly in comparison to existing technical systems. The use of 5G in port facilities will enable innovative applications such as autonomous driving of ships, automated logistics processes and networked maritime traffic management. As a result, the entire logistics, transport and organizational processes can be made more efficient, effective and safe.

The 5G-PortVG project is being implemented in the Western Pomerania region and is helping to establish it as one of the leading innovation clusters in the field of 5G applications in shipping and port logistics in the long term. Promoting the innovative strength of small commercial ports also makes a positive contribution to the economic development of coastal regions in order to strengthen them as business locations in the long term. The aim is to standardize applications and processes from the research project so that the knowledge gained in the joint project can then be transferred across projects to other commercial ports in Germany and Europe.
