Increasing digitalization poses challenges for districts, cities and municipalities in particular. Whether planning telecommunications and energy networks, modernizing administration or local public transport, sustainable decisions require all relevant data to be put into context. The visualization of data with a spatial reference in digital maps using geographic information systems (GIS) offers great added value for these planning and decision-making processes.

Against the backdrop of increasing demand for high bandwidths among citizens and companies, Rhineland-Palatinate is dynamically driving forward the gigabit expansion. The WebGIS-based data information portal (DIP) Rhineland-Palatinate brings together all data relevant to broadband expansion and provides an all-round view of broadband expansion. In this way, the state is supporting districts, cities and municipalities in particular with digitization.

As part of the Behördenspiegel congress “Digital Administration Rhineland-Palatinate”, Digital Minister Alexander Schweitzer activated the digital state platform DIP for applying for funding for the expansion of high-speed broadband networks on October 10. “The state is thus a pioneer in terms of the digitalization of administrative services. From today, local authorities can submit their applications for state funding to the state digitally as part of the gray-spot funding. A legally secure digital signature has also been implemented,” said Minister Schweitzer during the official online launch of the platform at the aconium GmbH trade fair stand.

The portal developed by aconium GmbH on behalf of the state offers the possibility of digitally signing applications and thus submitting them to the state without media discontinuity and without printing.

“For citizens, tradespeople and companies, the DIP will show, among many other features, a publicly available map of broadband coverage that provides information on the current coverage situation and the state’s current expansion plans. In addition, a status report on the digital infrastructures can be called up and downloaded for each district. In this way, the DIP can be used as a comprehensive information portal and planning tool for the public sector for gigabit expansion,” says Tim Brauckmüller, Managing Director of aconium GmbH.

The platform will be accessible via the central website www.gigabit.rlp.de in the next few days.
