Fast internet not only enables effective working from home, enjoyable distance learning or high video resolutions for streaming. Comprehensive broadband internet coverage is a prerequisite for the digital transformation. In June, Germany came a good deal closer to the goal of a digital society.
This is exemplified by 136 expansion milestones in June: 113 decisions handed over, 21 groundbreaking ceremonies and two start-ups in nine federal states. Once all construction measures have been completed, over 76,000 connections at these locations alone, spread across households, companies and institutional customers, will be supplied with gigabit bandwidths.
The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) is supporting these expansion projects with funding of around 316 million euros. With this funding as well as supplementary state funding programs and the municipal contribution, the BMVI, the states and the municipalities are jointly creating the basis for nationwide and future-proof broadband coverage and thus paving the way for the gigabit society.
The expansion activities in Baden-Württemberg were particularly impressive. In June, 60 decisions were handed over, six ground-breaking ceremonies and one commissioning took place. These expansion projects alone have a funding volume of over 30 million euros, with which the BMVI is subsidizing the supply of fibre optic to over 11,000 connections.
