The “Digital Regions – Today and Tomorrow” trade fair, organized by aconium GmbH, took place for the first time at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds from 24 to 26 October 2017. As part of the Broadband World Forum 2017 – a global meeting place for executives from the broadband industry with more than 300 industry representatives and over 4,000 visitors from more than 79 nations – the aconium GmbH hall combined the advantages of a trade fair and a specialist congress on the topics of broadband and digitalization.

While companies from the broadband industry presented innovative possibilities and concrete applications of digitization as well as current technologies in the aconium GmbH hall, the extensive congress program offered interesting insights into the topics of the gigabit society, broadband expansion and funding opportunities.

Tim Brauckmüller, Managing Director of aconium GmbH, opened the trade fair on October 24 and explained that the aim of the three-day event was to showcase broadband development in Germany as part of the Broadband World Forum, which was being held in Germany for the first time. Brauckmüller emphasized the immense dynamics of broadband expansion in Germany, which is why the trade fair wanted to bring together municipalities, regions and industry in order to further promote broadband expansion.

On the same day, more than 100 experts and representatives of regional and national administrations from Germany and the EU member states discussed the topic of broadband at the Governmental Workshop organized by aconium GmbH and exchanged views on key figures, political measures and best practice examples. The second day of the trade fair was dominated by the topics of broadband promotion and digital transformation. On the morning panel, speakers reported on the needs of the economy and on procedures such as funding opportunities from a consultant’s perspective, while on Wednesday afternoon, experts from the digitization industry came together at the autumn conference of the German Broadband Initiative(Initiative D21) to talk about the opportunities of digital transformation for cities, regions and citizens.

Concrete examples of digital networking in practice were the focus of the third and final day of the conference program. The results of a smart city study were presented and the potential of smart applications in rural regions from the perspective of German farmers were highlighted before the first “Digital Regions – Today and Tomorrow” trade fair organized by aconium GmbH came to an end at 6 p.m. on 28 October 2017. A very successful event – as confirmed by exhibitors and speakers alike!
