The turnaround in transportation that is necessary in terms of sustainability and climate protection is based on two basic prerequisites: Digitalisation and renewable energies.

Digitalisation creates the broadband infrastructure that is necessary for the logistics of traffic flows and the provision of transport services, whether in private transport, local public transport or the freight transport sector. From today’s perspective, three factors are decisive for this:

  • Nationwide availability of broadband Internet must be guaranteed – also and especially in rural areas.
  • For the upcoming 5G standard in mobile communications, the transmission masts must be coupled with fiber optic lines in order to provide optimum performance for all applications.
  • Intelligent applications and payment systems can control traffic flows, passengers and transportation goods efficiently, intermodally and with low consumption.

Renewable energies provide the fuel for the transport transition. Electromobility only makes sense in terms of climate protection if the electricity comes from renewable energy sources or the hydrogen for the fuel cell is produced sustainably.

Hydrogen trains on non-electrified railroad lines need green hydrogen if they want to avoid CO2 emissions and not just shift them. And the e-sports car must run on wind or solar power if its owner wants to be taken seriously as a pioneer of the transport revolution.

  • So we need to get wind, solar, biomass and hydropower into the tank.
  • We also need concepts for the gradual expansion of renewable power plants in order to cover the additional increase in electricity consumption in the transport sector.
  • At the same time, the energy and transport sectors must be linked in order to guarantee a balance between production and consumption and to avoid jeopardizing security of supply in Germany.

Digitalisation and the energy transition are the key processes for which politics, administration, business and science must find solutions in the medium term in order to advance the transport transition.

aconium will be making its contribution to this at Hypermotion (20 to 22 November 2018) with its “Digital Regions” congress programme. You will soon be able to download the speakers’ presentations there.
