After the spades were swung at the first symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the broadband expansion in the Heidekreis district in September 2017, the public kick-off event also took place on March 1 in the town of Munster – another expansion area in the district of Lower Saxony. The broadband expansion project in and around Munster was launched in the presence of District Administrator Manfred Ostermann, Christina Fleckenstein (Mayor of Munster), Lienhard Varoga (Office for Regional Development), Stefan Molkentin (Regional Manager North of aconium GmbH, the project sponsor on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure(BMVI)) and representatives of the telecommunications company carrying out the project.
Christina Fleckenstein explained that a reliable Internet connection with a very high bandwidth is a major advantage for the location: “This expansion will massively enhance the value of the outskirts of Munster in addition to the town, where fast connections are already available for the most part.” District Administrator Ostermann emphasized that the broadband infrastructure is being improved throughout the Heidekreis and that fast Internet is being expanded in areas where it is currently not worthwhile for telecommunications companies to expand. He added: “Fast Internet connections are in high demand – even outside the cities. We are making sure that people get these connections.”
Stefan Molkentin emphasized that the planned broadband expansion in Munster would also lay the foundation for future generations and digital requirements. He also underlined the good cooperation with the district’s project coordinators, who have ensured that Munster, another part of the overall expansion project in the Heidekreis, can now be connected to the broadband network.
The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is subsidizing the Heidekreis district’s infrastructure project with over 7.3 million euros as part of the federal broadband funding programme. The district is financing the project with 2.1 million euros of its own funds. Over 8,000 households and companies will be connected to fast and future-proof Internet connections in the coming months until completion.
