The 84 associated expansion projects alone will create over 80,000 new gigabit connections once all construction work is complete, including over 76,000 households, almost 8,000 companies, more than 650 institutions and around 450 schools. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV) is supporting these infrastructure projects alone with over 400 million euros from the federal government’s gigabit funding.
Together with the supplementary state funding programs and the municipal contributions, the federal government, the states and the municipalities are thus jointly creating the basis for nationwide and future-proof broadband coverage.
For the expanding municipalities, this high-performance digital infrastructure means a lasting strengthening as a business location, sustainable services of general interest for their citizens and the best conditions for a successful digital transformation.
The new federal Gigabit funding program is playing an increasingly important role here, supporting the expansion of gigabit-capable Internet in all areas where bandwidths of at least 100 Mbit/s are not yet available. Over a hundred applications for funding and advice have already been approved since the program was launched. At the same time, the first infrastructure projects from the Grey Spots program are preparing to break ground. It is therefore clear that German municipalities will continue to take major steps towards the gigabit society in 2022 with the help of joint federal and state funding.
