Broadband expansion in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) began on 19.03.2018 with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony in the municipality of Siggelkow. Christian Pegel (Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalisation of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), Wolfgang Schmülling (1st Deputy District Administrator of the Ludwigslust-Parchim district) and representatives of the telecommunications company commissioned with the project took part in the event, which marked the start of construction work in the first of a total of 16 project areas in the district. The aim is to provide the ‘white spots’ in the region with high-bit-rate Internet access.
“I am delighted that we can now break ground for the broadband expansion in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim. This is not least thanks to everyone involved,” said Minister Pegel, explaining that modern information and communication technology has become an integral part of private and professional life. “The basic prerequisite for our state to be able to participate in this development is comprehensive broadband coverage. “In this expansion area alone, 267 kilometers of civil engineering work will be carried out and 267 kilometers of new empty conduits created. At the end of the project, 3,558 households and 331 companies will be supplied with bandwidths of at least 100 Mbit/s. There are also plans to provide 32 educational establishments and 39 other institutions and administrative buildings with access with high data transfer rates.
Funding will be provided as part of the economic viability gap model. 15 million euros from the federal broadband funding program will flow into the expansion of this project area. Together with the state’s share of around 4.9 million euros and its own contribution of around 4.4 million euros, 24.3 million euros in funding will be made available for the construction of a fiber optic network in this area. The municipality of Siggelkow is the first of over 25 municipalities in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district to begin construction work.
