In August, the Federal Network Agency and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) published the latest figures on broadband coverage in Germany for the fixed network and mobile communications in Germany.
These are available to all citizens in the broadband atlas available to all citizens. The new data shows that expansion is progressing in Germany. The data refers to the end of 2022, which means that the nationwide fiber optic coverage rate is just over 23% of households. Together with the TV cable networks, more than 70% of households in Germany can receive gigabit connections. At present, even with the availability of faster bandwidths, many users still predominantly book connections with 50 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s, which are available to a good 90% of households overall.
Federal Minister Volker Wissing commented on the new figures: “The pace of expansion is high. Today, one in four households in Germany can already use high-performance fiber optic connections. Almost 70 percent of Germany is also covered by 5G mobile communications. We want to further accelerate the pace and support private-sector expansion with targeted funding and the removal of obstacles, such as alternative installation methods and simplified approval procedures.”
