The publication focuses on sustainable and smart urban lighting. It introduces the findings, recommendations, and tools that have been identified and created in the LUCIA project so far.
The first volume of the LUCIA Compendium provides a comprehensive set of information, practice-oriented examples, and lessons learnt on a wide range of topics from urban lighting technologies to essential lighting economics and green procurement of smart lighting, going through environmental and societal impacts. For example, municipal lighting managers can find specific tips and information on which quality and guarantee criteria should be observed when procuring LED luminaires, which means can be used to reduce light pollution or how the LUCIA calculation tool can help with an initial assessments of the economic and ecological benefits during the planning process of new lighting projects.
The compendium can serve as a quick introduction and guidebook with numerous further references, enabling a better understanding of urban lighting and its new developments. It will also help policy makers to be inspired by what is possible, desirable and needed and will assist in the decision-making process in cities.
The knowledge gained during the first phase of the LUCIA project will be put into practice by means of six pilot sites in the cities of Albertslund (Denmark), Hamburg (Germany), Jūrmala (Latvia), Porvoo (Finland), Saint Petersburg (Russia), and Tallinn (Estonia). The results and learnings from these pilot projects will be presented in the second volume of the LUCIA Compendium, which is expected to be released in autumn 2021.
