The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the broadband expansion took place in the Veltrup district of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Emsdetten on March 22, 2018. Representatives and project coordinators from the city of Emsdetten and representatives from the companies involved met to usher in a new era of broadband coverage.

The mayor of Emsdetten, Georg Moenikes, explained that as many areas of the town as possible should be connected. A good broadband supply is a prerequisite for sustainable agriculture. In addition, fast Internet would also make the town more attractive for young families. The aim is to make Emsdetten one of the first smart cities in Germany.

A complete fiber optic network (FTTB, Fibre to the Building) is being built in Emsdetten. The milestones in the expansion in the town on the River Ems include the areas of Veltrup, Austum, Hembergen, Isendorf Aechterhoek, Neuenkirchener Straße, Ahlintel, Hollingen and Südring/Blumenstraße. Matthias Schulze-Mantei, an employee of the agency for technology and networks KOM (aconium) in the regional office for Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, emphasized the importance of the ground-breaking ceremony and the resulting positive location factors.

Broadband funding from the federal government 850,273 euros in the infrastructure project. Once the project is completed at the end of 2019, 408 households and 64 companies will be able to benefit from internet access with transmission rates of at least 100 Mbit/s.
