On June 5, 2018, District Administrator Reinhard Frank, the mayor of Boxberg, Christian Kremer, as well as other local politicians and the companies involved in the expansion met at the official ground-breaking ceremony for the construction work in the ninth and final expansion area in Boxberg, in the south of the Main-Tauber district. “We don’t want to be left behind, we want to continue to ride the train into the future with our population,” said District Administrator Reinhard Frank, underlining the importance of the day.

Mayor Christian Kremer emphasized the expected benefits of the broadband expansion for his town: “I am delighted that work is now starting in Boxberg, fast internet connections have become an integral part of our citizens’ lives – both privately and in business. They are an important locational advantage.” Regional Manager Dr. Veit Steinle and funding consultant Susanne Menzel from the regional office for Baden-Württemberg were on site as representatives of aconium, the project management agency of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). Around 52 kilometers of fiber optic cable will be laid and 46 street distributors installed so that residents, companies and authorities in Boxberg will be connected to high-speed Internet in the future; 20 buildings will be connected directly with fiber optics (FTTB, Fibre-To-The-Building).

The nine-stage broadband expansion in the Main-Tauber district is being financed with a total of over 10.25 million euros from the BMVI’s federal broadband funding program. A further 4.1 million euros in funding is being provided by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The district is also contributing 6.1 million euros of its own funds to finance the expansion project. The district’s first expansion area was already put into operation in February, followed by the second at the end of May. Commissioning of the new network is planned for clusters 3, 4 and 5 in the summer. The overall project should be completed by the end of 2018. The Main-Tauber district will then have comprehensive broadband infrastructure coverage. A total of around 47,190 households and businesses in 18 towns and municipalities will have access to data transfer rates of at least 50 Mbit/s.
