Together with the mayor of Nümbrecht, Hilko Redenius, Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, Minister for Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, cut the symbolic ribbon to mark the commissioning of the first construction phase of the broadband expansion in the municipality of Nümbrecht on 26 May 2018.
The ceremony in the Elsenroth industrial estate was also attended by Dr. Carsten Brodesser, Member of the Bundestag, Bodo Löttgen, Member of the State Parliament, Lena Ehret of aconium, the project management agency of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), as well as representatives of the municipality and the company carrying out the work. Minister Pinkwart described the municipality of Nümbrecht as a “role model for all municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia” and was impressed by a broadband speed test that demonstrated the download and upload speeds of the new fiber optic network.
With the expansion of the broadband infrastructure, the municipality has gained a great deal of competitiveness and quality of life, said the Minister. Mayor Redenius was also proud of the successful and rapid progress of the expansion in Nümbrecht and the dedicated work of the administrative staff. As part of the BMVI’s federal broadband funding program, the municipality of Nümbrecht is receiving federal funding of almost 8.7 million euros for broadband expansion, with a further 8.7 million euros coming from state funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. A total of 1,617 kilometers of fiber optic cable are to be laid in the municipality of Nümbrecht. This will require 225 kilometers of civil engineering work. More than 7,500 households and 31 institutional customers, including seven schools and two hospitals, will benefit from the subsidized broadband expansion with Internet speeds of at least 50 Mbit/s. 125 companies are to achieve a transmission rate of 1 Gbit/s and higher.
