After 20 months of construction in eight phases, the subsidized broadband expansion project in the district of Neuwied was completed on November 22, 2018. The commissioning of the network with bandwidths of at least 50 Mbit/s marks an important step into the future for the more than 11,600 households and over 2,000 companies as well as 70 schools in the Rhineland-Palatinate region.

District Administrator Achim Hallerbach: “We are proud to be one of the first districts in Germany to have successfully implemented a project of this size and importance.”

The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) is funding the project with 6.7 million euros as part of the federal broadband funding program, with a good 5.37 million euros coming from the state and 1.3 million euros from own funds. The money was used to lay more than 460 kilometers of new fibre optic cable in the district of Neuwied.
