Civil engineering work for the new broadband network began in four municipalities in the district of Schaumburg on March 7. This is an important step into the digital future for Rinteln, Apelern, Lindhorst and Auetal. District Administrator Jörg Farr, Heike Fliess, State Commissioner for Regional Development Leine-Weser, the mayors of the towns involved and the joint municipalities, Dieter Brenneke, District of Schaumburg, Matthias Schulze-Mantei aconium GmbH, project sponsor of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, the project coordinators of the District of Schaumburg, representatives of the Broadband Competence Center of Lower Saxony and representatives of the company carrying out the work attended the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony in Soldorf, a district of Apelern.
District Administrator Farr explained that the population density in the district of Schaumburg is higher than in other regions. In this densely populated rural area, it is particularly important to close the gap between the telecommunications companies’ own expansion and the white spots. In recent months, all parties involved have sat down together and worked constructively on the expansion plans. This has accelerated the process. The district and municipalities are now relaxed about the expansion project. Every building in the expansion area is to be connected. This means that almost 9,000 households and 210 businesses will benefit from high-speed Internet.
The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is providing almost 2.9 million euros from the federal broadband funding program for the expansion project in the district of Schaumburg. By the time the project is completed at the end of July 2019, 146 kilometers of fibre optic cable will have been laid and 140 new cable distributors installed.
