The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony in the Mühlbeck district on March 22 marked the start of the subsidized broadband expansion in the municipality of Muldestausee in the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld (Saxony-Anhalt). State Secretary Thomas Wünsch (Ministry of Economic Affairs, Science and Digitalization of Saxony-Anhalt), Mayor Ferid Giebler (Muldestausee) and Daniel Knohr, Regional Manager of aconium, the sovereign project management agency of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), took part.

State Secretary Wünsch explained: “The broadband expansion in Saxony-Anhalt is gaining momentum. Supported by extensive funding from the state and federal government, more and more municipalities are creating the necessary infrastructure for the digital age. The municipality of Muldestausee is one of the pioneers in the state.” The expansion project will provide around 4,300 private households and more than 300 companies with network access of 50 Mbit/s and more, while 31 companies will have access to data transfer rates of 1 Gbit/s and more after completion. Public institutions in the districts of Friedersdorf, Gossa, Gröbern, Krina, Mühlbeck, Plodda, Schlaitz, Schmerz and Schwemsal will also benefit from the expansion of the digital infrastructure. A total of 38 institutions, including 4 schools, will be able to use data rates of at least 50 Mbit/s.

The project will receive 170,000 euros in funding from the BMVI’s federal broadband funding program. A further EUR 766,000 comes from state funds from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Joint Task for Agricultural and Coastal Protection (GAK).
